Stampede at Rajahmundry Godavari Pushkaralu
The 12-day-long ‘Godavari Pushkaralu’ began today in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. A stampede at the Pushkaralu ghat in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh has led to the death of at least 22 people with more causalities feared. More than 40 have been injured in the stampede.
Godavari Pushkaralu have started today and amid huge rush a stampede has taken place in which at least 27 people, mostly women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede on the banks of the River Godavari at Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh on the first day of a major religious festival.
Officials said that the tragedy occurred when a large number of pilgrims rushed towards one of the gates at Kotagummam Pushkar Ghat on the banks of Godavari river to take the holy dip. The injured were also admitted to the hospital for medical help.
