42 Congress MLAs Resign
Responding to the verdict of the Supreme Court on the long-pending Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal water sharing issue, all the 42 Congress MLAs of Punjab have reportedly tendered their resignation.
In 2004, the then Punjab govt. passed the controversial Termination of River Waters Act, which facilitated them to take unilateral decisions regarding the sharing of water with neighboring states Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The SYL water sharing case has been in the court for several years with Haryana and Punjab states at loggerheads to claim the majority share of the river water. On Thursday, the Supreme Court gave a verdict in favor of Haryana, prompting the Congress leaders to submit resignations.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh, whose govt. passed that controversial Act in 2004, was the first person to resign to his Lok Sabha seat. Later, as per his instructions, all the 42 party MLAs of his party too submitted their resignations by personally meeting the speaker on Friday morning.
The Congress leaders claimed that they have decided to resign to protest against the injustice meted to the people of Punjab. The Assembly elections are due to take place in the state in 2017. Congress is planning to use this SYL issue to dethrone the BJP-pro government. – See more at: http://www.gulte.com/news/53414/42-Congress-MLAs-Resign-#sthash.7s6Lwevt.dpuf
